What is Blood Sugar Balancing?

When we eat a meal, our blood sugar levels (glucose) rise, as glucose is absorbed from the food. As a result, insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, is released to help transport glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, where it’s used for energy.
Blood sugar balancing involves maintaining steady glucose levels throughout the day, avoiding sharp spikes and crashes. This balance is crucial not only for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes; keeping blood sugar levels within a healthy range is essential for preventing various health complications, promoting longevity and maintaining overall health. High blood sugar can be toxic, damaging your cells, causing inflammation and storing excess glucose as fat cells. But low blood sugar means your body won’t have the energy it needs to function, making you feel tired, hungry and lethargic. Very high and very low blood sugar are both extremely dangerous, and even moderately unhealthy glucose responses can damage your health in the long term. "Balance" is key.

Dietary Guidelines
Choosing Complex Carbohydrates: these are starches and fibre that take longer to digest, leading to a slower and steadier release of glucose into the bloodstream, avoiding rapid spikes in blood sugar. Include vegetables, legumes and fruits with lower GI that release glucose more slowly, preventing rapid spikes.
Balancing Meals: each meal should include a combination of macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats. Proteins and fats slow down digestion, preventing quick rises in blood sugar after meals. Pair carbohydrates with protein and healthy fats to slow glucose absorption. Excellent protein sources include: eggs, fish and lean meats. Legumes, dairy products, nuts and seeds, tofu and tempeh. Healthy fats include avocados, nuts and seeds, olive oil, etc.
Fibre-Rich Food: incorporate vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes. Fibre slows down digestion, regulates blood sugar and promotes satiety.
Portion Control and Timing: Be mindful of carbohydrate portions to prevent overconsumption. Moderate portion sizes and space meals evenly throughout the day. Ideally, eat 3 meals a day. Avoid skipping meals as it helps prevent extreme fluctuations in blood sugar. Regular meal patterns help maintain steady blood sugar levels. Remember, focus on quality and variety, avoiding overconsumption.
Limit Refined Sugars and Simple Carbs: minimise the intake of processed food and refined carbs as they cause rapid spikes in blood sugar. Focus on quality, nutrient content and variety.
Stay Hydrated: adequate water intake supports kidney function in eliminating excess glucose. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can also affect blood sugar levels.
Lifestyle Guidelines
Regular Physical Activity: engage in both aerobic and resistance exercises to improve insulin sensitivity. Exercise aids in glucose uptake by the cells, improving insulin sensitivity and helping regulate blood sugar levels. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intense exercise per week, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and strength training exercises like lifting weights.
Stress Management: chronic stress impacts blood sugar levels by triggering hormonal changes that affect insulin sensitivity. Practice stress reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing or hobbies that promote relaxation.
Adequate Sleep: Lack of sleep can affect hormones that regulate appetite and blood sugar levels, leading to imbalances. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
Limit Alcohol, Sugary Beverages and Caffeinated drinks: Reduce intake of alcoholic and sugary drinks as they can lead to fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Reduce the intake of caffeinated drinks as caffeine stimulates the release of adrenaline and cortisol, promoting the breakdown of glycogen.
