But let’s be honest, stepping out of your usual routine can make it harder to stay on track with the healthy habits you’ve worked so hard to build. As a Health & Wellness Coach, I often hear this concern from clients: “I want to enjoy my holiday, but I don’t want to undo all the progress I’ve made.”
The good news? You can do both.
A holiday doesn’t have to mean abandoning your wellbeing. With a few mindful strategies, you can maintain a sense of balance, feel your best throughout your trip, and return home refreshed, not depleted. Here are my top tips for a healthy, happy, and fully enjoyable holiday:
1. Redefine What Balance Means on Holiday
Let go of the all-or-nothing mindset. Health is not about restriction, it’s about flexibility and choice. You can indulge mindfully and nourish your body simultaneously. One less-than-ideal meal doesn’t cancel out the habits you’ve built.
Aim for “good enough” most days, not perfect.
2. Stay Nourished with Simple, Fresh Choices
Holiday food is part of the experience! Focus on enjoying local flavours, and gently balance indulgences with nourishing meals:
- Choose a protein-rich breakfast to keep you full and energised.
- Add colourful veg or fruit to at least one main meal daily.
- Stay hydrated; carry a reusable water bottle and drink throughout the day.
3. Move Your Body in Ways That Feel Good
Movement doesn't need to be structured; on holiday, it can be joyful and spontaneous:
- Take scenic walks or explore by bike.
- Swim, dance, stretch, or try a gentle morning routine on the balcony.
- Use stairs, stroll through markets, or play with the kids at the beach.
4. Prioritise Rest and Quality Sleep
This is your time to unwind, so make sure you’re giving your body what it truly needs: rest.
- Create a calming wind-down routine, even if it’s short.
- Avoid over-scheduling; leave space for spontaneous rest.
- Reduce screen time before bed to help your mind settle.
5. Stay Grounded with Tiny Rituals
When your usual structure is missing, anchor yourself with micro-habits:
- Start your day with a short breathwork or gratitude practice.
- Carry a mini wellness kit (like herbal teas, supplements, essential oils).
- Keep 1 or 2 non-negotiable habits you know support you, like a short morning walk or 5 minutes of journaling.
6. Tune Into How You Want to Feel
Before your trip, ask: How do I want to feel during and after this holiday? Energised? Nourished? Rested? Use this intention to guide your daily choices without pressure or guilt.
It’s not about control, it’s about alignment with what truly matters to you.
Final Thought
Holidays are for enjoyment, connection, and rest. When approached mindfully, they can also be a time to deepen your wellness journey, not derail it. Give yourself permission to enjoy every bite, every moment, every sunrise... while gently honouring the healthy lifestyle you've worked so hard to create.
Remember: consistency over time matters more than short-term perfection.
Wishing you a joyful, nourishing, and well-balanced summer!
